Thesis Title: AMPLITUDE AND PHASE SONAR CALIBRATION AND THE USE OF TARGET PHASE FOR ENHANCED ACOUSTIC TARGET CHARACTERISATION

Phil Atkins

About

I came to the field of underwater acoustics after working as a Design Engineer for a Lowrance, a sonar company based in Oklahoma and Baja California, that is now part of Navico.

Now I'm doing a PhD in sonar target classification at the University of Birmingham, in the UK. We look at target-induced phase-shifts in the echo, as a useful parameter for automatic target classification.

I'm interested in the broader implications of remote sensing and signal processing, in the areas of information theory, pattern recognition, communications and even into the frontiers of semiotics and philosophy.
