About
I am interested in the ways in which different people moved through the ancient city - what they did, where, why, and with whom. I am particularly interested in how movement and interaction was constructed, mediated and subsequently represented in Roman culture. I am currently writing up a paper on the relantionships between age, physical exertion, and movement. Over the coming months I will be writing up a paper on movement, commentary and the locus celeberrimus.
My PhD research (2006-10) focused on the movement to and through fora in Rome and Roman Italy: http://etheses.bham.ac.uk/814/1/Newsome10PhD.pdf
I previously won the BABesch-Byvanck award for my research on traffic and urban change in Pompeii. I co-edited a volume on movement and space in the Roman City, with Prof. Ray Laurence.
