Thesis Title: Violence, trauma and identity in the formation of political consciousness amongst young Tibetan refugees in Nepal and India
About
I am a graduate of the Universities of St Andrews (History) and Birmingham (International Development), with strong interests in Conflict & Human Security, Human Rights, Refugee Studies and the politics of identity and exclusion. My post-graduate dissertation examined the duality of exile amongst young Tibetan refugees, exploring on the one hand the narratives of suffering that many refugees experience, and on the other, the political importance such narratives frequently bear. I intend to continue this research for my PhD study, exploring the exigent concerns inherent to the so-called universal 'refugee experience' that young Tibetans experience -and are often missed through the politicisation of the diaspora- whilst at the same time tracing their importance for political identities.
Whilst my thesis remains localised and ethnographic in focus, its themes reflect my broader interests in human-security, migration, and conflict - as well as those of identity politics, religion in development and the rights-based approach.
