The talk examines Ernst Johannsen’s thematising of the role and plight of the horse – in this case, a German mare – on the Western Front.

Some 53 years before the publication of Michael Morpurgo’s “War Horse”, Johannsen’s "A Horse's Memoir of the Front" (1929) creates an equine (narrator-)protagonist as an ingenious device with which to expose the madness of (the) war.
