Prediction
Math people believe Germany will be the winner of 2010.
Proof
Champion repeats among a small group of countries, and one notable feature is that they all add up to 3964! See evidence,

Greece for Sale?
Thursday, July 01, 2010
Further to the headline of privatising Greek public sectors such as railway and water companies,

Not sure if you've missed this news but it was said Greece decides to sell/rent 6,000 islands in Aegean Sea to get money – though this was the proposal by the German president Merkel four months ago…

MATLAB of Economic/Financial Use
Saturday, April 10, 2010
My computer collapsed a month ago so unfortunately I had to spend a further ten days on two things: fix the hardware plus reinstall two OSs. No need to mention the “software installation project”, which is still an ongoing job - since I tend to use a number of softwares and I lost quite a few copies of them.
The whole process was a nightmare – on the promise of that I lost a month’s research and half year’s personal files. And on top of the hardware pain, it was not easy to reinstall two systems in my slightly dated but super ROM-picky laptop… I was fed up in the middle but got over it after all.
It was not full of sorrow anyway. Since I had to start with nothing it was easy for me to upgrade certain softwares, for instance, MATLAB. I would never uninstall my old copy of MATLAB unless it was extremely necessary, i.e. significant progress was made on the new version and it chanced that I had one, for which I would doubt. MATLAB (as well as SAS) is some programme could not be my favouritest at least for one reason – it is trying to coverall, thus sizable, thus slow.
I now have a new copy of MATLAB: version 7.10 release 2010a (the latest for now). The installation files are even doubled at first sight. It is occupying 5.22 GB (5,611,136,216 bytes) now! But as a matter of fact the executives are doubled: for 32-bit and 64-bit computers respectively. So do not get shocked MATLAB did not change its core. If you are using 32-bit processor system like me, 2.76 GB (2,968,752,079 bytes) is required for the installation files.
Nowadays very few of geniuses can be an economist dealing with Computational Finance as well as a physicist specialising in Signal Processing in the meantime (Aristotle, Newton, da Vinci and Goethe were almighty but they did not use computers!). So the important hint here is it is fairly UNNECESSARY to install everything, dress to the figure! The general guide for Economic/Financial users is to install the following packages (release numbers are of 2010a, ignore if you are using a different version, refer to the names of packages/products only),
• MATLAB Distributed Computing Server 4.3 /*Perform MATLAB and Simulink computations on computer clusters and server farms*/
• MATLAB 7.10 /*The Language of Technical Computing*/
• Simulink /*Simulation and Model-Based Design///Recommended but excluded from my installation*/
• Curve Fitting Toolbox 2.2 /*Fit curves and surfaces to data using regression, interpolation, and smoothing*/
• Data Acquisition Toolbox 2.16 /*Acquire and send out data from plug-in data acquisition boards*/
• Database Toolbox 3.7 /*Exchange data with relational databases*/
• Datafeed Toolbox 3.5 /*Acquire financial data from data service providers*/
• Econometrics Toolbox 1.3 /*Model and analyze financial and economic systems using statistical methods*/
• Financial Derivatives Toolbox 5.5.1 /*Model and analyze equity and fixed-income derivatives*/
• Financial Toolbox 3.7.1 /*Analyse financial data and develop financial algorithms*/
• Fixed-Income Toolbox 1.9 /*Model and analyze fixed-income securities*/
• Fixed-Point Toolbox 3.1 /*Design and execute fixed-point algorithms and analyze fixed-point data*/
• Global Optimization Toolbox 3.0 /*Solve multiple maxima, multiple minima, and nonsmooth optimization problems*/
• Image Acquisition Toolbox 3.5 /*Acquire images and video from industry-standard hardware*/
• Image Processing Toolbox 7.0 /*Perform image processing, analysis, and algorithm development*/
• MATLAB Report Generator 3.8 /*Generate documentation for MATLAB applications and data*/
• Model-Based Calibration Toolbox /*Calibrate complex powertrain systems///Recommended but excluded from my installation*/
• Neural Network Toolbox 6.0.4 /*Design and simulate neural networks*/
• Optimization Toolbox 5.0 /*Solve standard and large-scale optimization problems*/
• Parallel Computing Toolbox 4.3 /*Perform parallel computations on multicore computers and computer clusters*/
• Partial Differential Equation Toolbox 1.0.16 /*Solve partial differential equations using finite element methods*/
• Spline Toolbox 3.3.8 /*Create and manipulate spline approximation models of data*/
• Spreadsheet Link EX 3.1.1 /*Use MATLAB from Microsoft Excel*/
• Statistics Toolbox 7.3 /*Perform statistical analysis, modelling, and algorithm development*/
• Symbolic Math Toolbox 5.4 /*Perform mathematics using symbolic computation and variable-precision arithmetic*/
The whole size of this parsimonious version then will be 1.25 GB (1,352,496,898 bytes), or else it will take more than 5GB off! – For some packages an economist will probably never use.
